Sainte-Chapelle and Conciergerie

Sainte-Chapelle
Sainte-Chapelle was built in 1240s. The stained glass windows are unbelievable and are the finest in the whole Paris. It was intended for the private chapel of the Kings. The chapel was built to house precious holy relics. The stained glass in the chapel was massive and totally took our breath away. These windows are simply too large to be captured with our small digital camera. Each stained glass window tells a story from the old testament on the Bible. And the ceiling-to-floor stained glass windows cover three sides of the chapel!

Conciergerie
The Conciergerie was the royal palace before the Louvre was built. During the Revolution it became a prison where 2600 prisoners were kept. Marie Antoinette’s cell was also here. The tower facing the river Seine is where prisoners were tortured. Since tortured prisoners’ screams could be heard across the river Seine, it is called “Big Mouth Tower.” It’s such a beautiful place and I can’t imagine how many people were tortured here.
